In 1976 Andre was asked to work in Houston Headquarters as a cargo allocator and helped design a segregated ballast system and retrofit the company’s vessels for the Alaskan crude oil trade. As second officer/navigator he sailed from Norfolk Virginia through the Straits of Magellan to Valdez Alaska and was aboard the second ship to load at the Valdez, Alaska Terminal. He was promoted to first officer/chief mate in 1978 and to Captain in 1981. In 1984 he spent several years as Port Captain in San Francisco, California. From 1987 to 2005 he was captain of various size tankers including Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC).
